The origins of Cost Plus World Market are humble enough: In 1958, a well-traveled businessman decided to sell a shipload of hand-woven wicker from a pier. When his furniture sold out in a few days, he decided he was on to something. Cost Plus was born, selling items at cost, plus 10 percent (thus the name). Although the store is a national chain, its spirited atmosphere and eclectic offerings make it a natural for our local audience. Shopping is an adventure here, with products from around the globe, like jute rugs from India, sculptures from Kenya, towels from Turkey and a huge selection of imported gourmet food and wines. For many of us there’s no substitute for British tea, Italian pastas and sauces, Australian Vegemite, French wine, Jamaican spices and German meats. Cost Plus satisfies our worldly appetites and then some.
