For even the most dedicated ice cream maven, Glacier presents quite a challenge: 800 flavors! A top seller is fresh Colorado peach, about which owner Mark Mallen says, “We’ll process over 1,000 pounds of peaches a year from the Western Slope to make ice cream, gelato and sorbet.” In business only since 2001, Glacier was recently chosen one of the 10 best ice cream stores in America by forbestraveler.com. “We’re very grateful to the Boulder County community,” says Mallen. “They recognize quality products and have given us great support. We put quality ahead of profit; the profit comes later.” He credits his employees: “We employ great people – the ice cream makers and the counter people. We look for employees who are personable, because customers come in who are, 1., already in a good mood or, 2., want to be in a better mood.” Mallen works with other local companies and chefs to create unique culinary experiences – like honey peanut butter ice cream made from Justin’s nut butter, a dinner at Restaurant 4580, pairing each course with a different ice cream, and an “ultimate chocolate” dessert for Radda. “Boulder is such a great community, with locally owned, independent businesses. I hope they continue; we need to keep supporting the locals.”
