Oh, to be a lucky dog spending the day at Cottonwood Kennels! First, there’s the friendly staff, dedicated to caring for your canine’s every need. Then there are all the exciting adventures to be had, like playing with the other dogs or walking in the pasture and investigating all the sights and sounds. There’s always good food and a quiet climate-controlled place to retire for a rest. It’s like visiting a very cool farm. “Our staff of 32 caretakers works very hard. We put a lot of energy into hiring the best people who have a real love for pets, then we train them well,” says co-owner Tom Bonfili. “Our customers appreciate the full, customized care their pets receive here. Dogs who can play together with others enjoy socializing in the group yard. We take the older dogs or dogs that need more one-on-one attention on private accompanied walks where there are lots of stimulating things to keep them interested.” Bonfili, who has been at Cottonwood Kennels since the mid-70s, says that some of their pet owners remember coming in with their parents. Cats get their own special place up on the second floor, where there are lots of plants, windows and space to hang out. “We have a rocking chair up there, and we like to give the cats plenty of snuggle time.”

Cottonwood Kennels has won the Boulder County Gold Award since 2003. “Our staff does a fantastic job,” says Tom Bonfili, co-owner of the kennel with Penny Vardell. “They work very hard and have to be very dedicated. They really have to love animals.” The staff provide Boulder County’s pets with tender, loving, play-and-stay care in an idyllic setting. Located on a small farm that also houses sheep, alpaca, ducks, chickens and peacocks, the facility features spacious, stimulating outdoor and indoor environments for dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, ferrets and most other small animals. Special-needs pets are welcomed, and the kennel has a toll-free number that owners may call any time for a progress report. But year after year, what sets Cottonwood apart are the pet-to-person connections, the high-quality interactions between the staff and every one of its boarders, every day. “The bottom line is you have to really care, you have to want to do the best job possible – and we do,” Bonfili emphasizes.
