McGuckin Hardware

Sometimes you don’t need a big box of bolts. “We have lots of products that we sell in single units,” says McGuckin marketing manager Randy Barker. “You can buy one nut, bolt, screw, washer, sheet of sandpaper or a single picture hanger. We sell grass seed by the pound and rope, chain or cable by the foot.” That’s just one of the simple but profound things McGuckin Hardware does every day to service its loyal customers. Another is employing a helpful team of experts. “When you buy from us, our knowledgeable employees can help you select the right product the first time. At other stores you are sometimes on your own, and if you are not competent in what you are doing you may purchase the wrong thing,” says Barker. “In some cases, we have assisted customers in repairing their product rather than having to bear the expense of a replacement.” Speaking of repairs, McGuckin houses a service shop that cuts keys and glass, repairs window screens and lamps, cut boards, replaces broken tool handles and sharpens knives and blades.

McGuckin Hardware

McGuckin Hardware stocks more than 200,000 items in 18 departments, including hardware, tools, housewares, camping gear, sporting goods, electronics, pet supplies, eco-friendly products, fireplaces, flowers, gifts, and school and office supplies. Don’t get the wrong idea though; McGuckin is anything but a generic, impersonal warehouse. It’s a 60,000-square-foot embodiment of our community’s essence. “Our product mix is geared to being located in Boulder,” says marketing manager Randy Barker. “Being independently owned allows us to react to our customers’ needs immediately. There’s no corporate office that needs to be consulted.” The owners are on the floor every day, taking note of customer preferences so inventory can be tailored to best meet their wants and needs. Also on the floor are the green vested heroes of McGuckin, the ones who can find the light bulb, hinge pin or nontoxic paint that has eluded you at every other store in town. “The key to that level of service is the longevity of our staff,” explains Barker. “We have a strong core of employees who have worked in the store for 10, and some even up to 40, years.”

McGuckin Hardware

Multiple award winner McGuckin Hardware is the epitome of good customer service. “The customer service standpoint sets us apart from many other stores,” says marketing manager Randy Barker. “This has been a family-owned business since 1955, and the customer-service example is set by the owners: Dave Hight and his son, Barry Hight, are active on the sales floor and serving customers every day. Due to the size of the store – 60,000 square feet with more than 200,000 items – it is often difficult for customers to locate things on their own. We strive to provide outstanding service to help them find what they’re looking for. We try to be available, but not overbearing.” Barker says the store is busy, despite the tough economy. “People are coming in here to get assistance on repair and maintenance to extend the life of products, rather than replacing them with new products.”
