Whether by choice or by chance, we’ve all done some solo time as a “single.” The very term seems to suggest you’re a little “less than,” doesn’t it? But hey, being single has its good points. You never have to fight over the TV remote, or make what’s-for-dinner compromises. And you get to flirt like you mean it. We choose The Mediterranean Restaurant as this year’s top spot for singles to hang out, put on that flirt and (just maybe) meet someone special. Two full bars, cozy dining areas and a romantic outdoor patio set the scene, providing lots of quality people watching. Get over to happy hour at The Med, where there’s a bounty of tasty tapas, mouthwatering pizzas and refreshing cool drinks guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Seven days a week from 3 to 6:30 pm, The Med’s happy hour menu tempts us with small-plate selections from the culinary traditions of the sunny Mediterranean. Order several and pass them around – you’re bound to discover a new “favorite” you haven’t tried yet. “We keep our prices at real happy prices,” says Peg Romano, who opened The Med over 17 years ago. “It’s a great deal, and we’re not going to change the formula; it’s working great. We even make our own fresh mozzarella cheese.” Start with Bruschetta, some Fried Artichoke Hearts and perhaps some Polenta with red pepper coulis and a nice glass of Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. The Margarita pizza, bubbly hot from the wood-fired oven with its golden crust, is divine simplicity (they serve up to 200 of them on a weekend night), perfect with a draft beer or glass of Chianti. Or get fancy with Cabbage leaves stuffed with cous-cous, peppers, olives and pine nut salad – a crunchy mélange of flavor that will have you ordering seconds. There’s no better place to enjoy your happy hour, lunch or dinner than the fabulous courtyard patio, just a few steps from the hustle-bustle of downtown. With its colorful geraniums, market umbrellas, hand painted tiles and a fountain, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a private garden retreat in Italy. Locals just call it “The Med” but the short moniker is deceptive for a restaurant that delivers so much. The Med is a longtime favorite destination for Happy Hour aficionados who enjoy the extensive menu of tasty appetizers, tapas and pizzas. Order up a frosty microbrew, a sangria or handmade Martini so your other hand has something to do. Unwind, chat up a new friend. There’s no need to hurry; this “hour” lasts from 3 to 6:30 p.m., seven days a week. The cheery patio, festooned with flowers, a fountain and colorful tiles, is a special getaway retreat with a hint of the Côte d’Azur, just steps from the bustle of downtown. “We’ve spent a lot of effort on the aesthetics of our outdoor dining,” says manager Mike Gleason. “It’s a comfortable space; people are willing to wait a bit longer to enjoy the ambiance of our patio.” Eating light, or just want to experiment with some new dishes?
